Bobi’s Campaign creates awareness of the national Flag among the Youth
By Hannington Sebuliba
Take it or Leave it, National Unity Platform’s Presidential Candidate Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine should be credited for creating awareness of Uganda’s national flag among the youth and rural dwellers.
I am not campaigning for NUP but what I have clearly observed on TV, Newspapers and Social Media is a clear manifestation that more Ugandans especially the youth and the rural people can now clearly identify our National Flag.
Just four years ago, people exhibited ignorance about the National symbols as one of them was reported to have responded that the flag, national identity card, and national anthem were the national symbols.
What amused the people most was a police officer who exhibited ignorance since he could not define “national symbols” at all.
A businessman who had left school in 2004 said he had forgotten them and saw no current use for them.
A 2020 report indicated that many Ugandans were unaware of their country’s national symbols, citing a lack of civic education as the main cause. This deficiency was noted at multiple levels, with many people unable to identify basic elements like the colors of the flag or the meaning behind them. The symbols themselves include the national flag with a crested crane, the national coat of arms, and the national anthem.
Now the Kyagulanyi campaign team strategists should be applauded for making one of the symbols (the National Flag) more known to the masses. Their campaign crowds are filled with people waving the National Flag.
I have seen their principal giving out flags to people and I think this should be adopted by all other candidates.
I was only annoyed to see a police dog tearing a Uganda flag in Kawempe as they dispersed Kyagulanyi’s supporters. The Police officer who let the dog tear the flag should apologise to the nation
