This evening,, former Agriculture Minister, Hon. Victoria Sekitoleko gave a talk to the rotary club of Kajjansi on the issue of attaining a middle class status in Uganda. She told Rotarians that this years drought was a wake-up call for Ugandans to always harvest rain water and be used for irrigation.
She cited need to start having training of irrigation plumbers in our technical institutes to be helpful in irrigation. "We should stop gambling." she said.
She went on to say that Uganda needs to train irrigation engineers and plumbers. Govt should stop gambling with agriculture.
In the past we used to have granaries to help us have food security but now people consume the little they have produced leading to famine. The day we stopped graduated tax most men stopped working hard.
On the issue of the Army worm which is rampant these days to be actually Fall worm & came in Uganda as a result of foreign aid. She revealed that it came from the west as we begged food.
She was saddened to note that girls are encouraged to visit the bush at 13 yrs but no-one tells them about the one relevant issue in their lives which is agriculture.
She also noted that Makerere doesn't teach Agrarian law. She also said that the Agric police unit was created & personnel have no clue about agriculture.
She gave statistics saying that 80% of all girls in Uganda end up in Agric & 4 out of 10 employed women are in agriculture.

Watermelon and pumpkins are indigenous African plants. People have started bringing in fake seeds from China and those have come with diseases.
To parents who don't want their children to engage in agriculture please involve them and show them that you yourself can do it.
The only sector that can lead Ugandans to a middle class status is Agriculture if we engage in it on a commercial basis.
she said that people who transport fish usually urinate on them just saying that they smell.
