THE Government has hailed Rotarians in Uganda for their contribution to the country’s development through their humanitarian work.

Speaking at the opening of the 86th Rotary district 9200 conference and assembly at Commonwealth Resort Munyonyo yesterday, the Prime Minister, Prof. Apolo Nsibambi, said: “The Government applauds Rotary International for distinguishing itself and supporting communities in our country to live a better life. We have noted with appreciation the various community projects that the Rotary clubs in this country are engaged in.”

“These projects go a long way in contributing to the Government’s commitment to fight poverty, hunger and eliminate disease and illiteracy,” Nsibambi said.

He added that the Government was committed to achieving the millennium development goals and observed that Rotary clubs were allies in the cause.

Nsibambi cited their support in providing furniture, laboratories and scholastic materials to schools and provision of medical equipment, drugs and mosquito nets to communities.

He also said their focus on basic education, literacy and disease prevention and treatment were vital.

Nsibambi also hailed the organisation for its donations and said the global targets were similar to Rotary’s priority areas.

The three-day conference, which started on Wednesday, brought together over 2,000 members of the club from Eritrea, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.

The president of Rotary International, Ray Klinginsmith, urged the clubs to recruit more young people and teach them to live responsibly.

He said the organisation would provide more scholarships to the young members to facilitate international exchange trips between member countries.
